How to Turn an Old iPhone Into a Baby Monitor (Free)

You probably have an old iPhone sitting in a drawer right now. An iPhone 8, XR, or 11 that still works fine but got replaced when you upgraded. That phone is one free download away from being a better baby monitor than most $200 dedicated devices on the market.

This guide walks through exactly how to do it in under five minutes — no special equipment, no subscriptions, no sketchy workarounds. Just two iPhones and an app.

Why an iPhone makes a great baby monitor

Dedicated baby monitors typically ship with a 480p camera, a 2.4 GHz analog radio, and a range of about 50 feet. An iPhone 8 has a 12 megapixel camera, a dual-band radio, and works over your home WiFi or cellular network — which means you can check on your baby from the grocery store, from work, or from anywhere in the world.

Compared to a traditional monitor, you get:

  • Much better video quality. A 1080p HDR stream versus a grainy 480p analog feed.
  • Virtually unlimited range. Works anywhere you have internet.
  • Better audio. iPhone microphones are far more sensitive than the cheap mics in dedicated monitors.
  • Smart alerts. Push notifications the moment sound crosses a threshold you set.
  • Zero extra hardware. You already own it.

What you need before you start

  • One old iPhone (iOS 15 or later — any model from iPhone 8 onward)
  • Your current iPhone (or another family member's)
  • A charging cable for the old phone
  • A stable WiFi connection (or cellular data on both phones)
  • A phone stand or mount for the old iPhone

If you don't have a stand, a stack of books works fine. The goal is just to prop the phone up so the camera points at the crib.

Step 1: Factory reset the old iPhone (optional but recommended)

If the old iPhone has years of junk on it, a factory reset clears it out so it can run smoothly. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. This takes a few minutes.

Don't reset your personal data without backing it up first. If you haven't already pulled photos and contacts off the old phone, do that now.

Step 2: Install BabyMonitor Luna on both devices

Download BabyMonitor Luna from the App Store on both phones. It's free to install, and the core features (audio monitoring, push alerts, two-way talk) work without a subscription.

Sign in with the same email on both devices. This links them to the same family so they can talk to each other securely.

Step 3: Set up the baby device

On the old iPhone (the one that will stay with the baby):

  1. Open the app and tap "Baby" when asked which role this device has.
  2. Grant microphone and camera permissions.
  3. Place the phone somewhere it has a clear view of the crib. Make sure the lens isn't blocked by a case.
  4. Plug in the charger. Monitoring uses ~10% battery per hour.
  5. Tap the monitoring toggle to start streaming. The screen will stay on so you can verify the feed is working.

Step 4: Set up the parent device

On your current phone:

  1. Open the same app.
  2. Tap "Parent" when asked.
  3. You'll see the baby device in the list — tap the video icon to start watching.

That's it. You now have a live audio and video feed of your baby, and push notifications will fire the moment the baby makes noise above your sensitivity threshold.

Tips for making it work reliably

  • Keep both devices plugged in. Especially the baby device — WebRTC video streaming is battery-intensive.
  • Turn on Airplane mode + WiFi-only on the baby device if you want to save battery and extend the phone's life. WebRTC works fine over WiFi alone.
  • Disable Auto-Lock in Settings → Display & Brightness so the screen doesn't turn off and stop the camera feed.
  • Use a tripod or phone stand angled down into the crib. A $10 phone tripod from Amazon works great.

Is it safe to use a phone this way?

The main concerns people have are privacy (is someone intercepting the feed?) and radiation (is the phone too close to the baby?).

Privacy: BabyMonitor Luna uses end-to-end encrypted WebRTC — no audio or video ever touches our servers. The connection is peer-to-peer between your devices.

Radiation: A phone in airplane mode emits zero radio waves, and even with WiFi on, the RF emissions are a tiny fraction of what you get from just holding a phone to your ear. Keep it 3+ feet from the crib and you're fine.
