The 5 Best Free Baby Monitor Apps for iPhone in 2026
Search "free baby monitor app" on the App Store and you'll get hundreds of results. The problem: almost none of them are actually free. Most lock the useful features behind a paywall, expire after 24 hours, or require a monthly subscription to do anything beyond play a white noise loop.
We installed and tested twelve of the top-ranked free baby monitor apps on iOS to find the ones that actually work without paying. Here's what we found.
What we tested for
We graded each app on six criteria:
- Actually free — core monitoring features work without a subscription.
- Audio quality — clear, low-latency, no echo or clipping.
- Video support — live HD video from baby to parent.
- Works over cellular — not just WiFi-only.
- Privacy — end-to-end encryption, no tracking.
- Notifications — push alerts when the baby cries.
The results
1. BabyMonitor Luna (recommended)
We'll be upfront that this is our own app, but we built it because every other option failed one of the six tests. Core monitoring (audio, sound alerts, two-way talk) is genuinely free. HD video and unlimited family members are behind a 7-day free trial, but you don't need them to use the app day-to-day.
Free features: Live audio streaming, two-way talk, sound-based push notifications, up to 2 family members, end-to-end encryption, cellular + WiFi support.
Paid features: HD video, unlimited family, priority support.
Verdict: The most feature-complete truly-free baby monitor app we tested. Works over cellular, end-to-end encrypted, no ads.
2. Cloud Baby Monitor
A veteran in the space. Solid audio streaming, works on iOS and macOS. The free tier is limited to local network only — to get remote monitoring over the internet you have to pay a one-time upgrade fee ($9.99 at time of writing).
Verdict: Good for local use, but the "free" tier is really a demo. You'll want to upgrade.
3. Annie Baby Monitor
Decent UI, but the free tier has a 3-day trial before locking down all features. After the trial, you can only use it for 30 minutes a day unless you subscribe. Not really "free."
Verdict: Skip unless you want a free trial.
4. Baby Monitor 3G
Works over cellular, which is unusual for free apps. Audio-only. No end-to-end encryption (video/audio passes through third-party servers). Heavy ads in the free tier.
Verdict: Functional but ad-heavy and has privacy concerns.
5. BabyPhone Mobile
Completely free, audio-only, local WiFi only. Simple and does exactly one thing. No ads. No video. No cellular. No encryption advertised.
Verdict: Fine for the nursery-to-living-room use case. Useless for anything else.
The 7 apps we dropped from the list
The other seven apps we tested all fell into one of these categories:
- Fake free. Free to download, but every button opens a paywall.
- 24-hour trial then locked. Usable for one day, then nothing works.
- Ad-riddled. Full-screen ads every few minutes — catastrophically bad for an app you want running overnight.
- Data harvesters. Required an account, asked for contacts permission, and privacy policy revealed they sold data to advertisers.
What to look for in a free baby monitor app
If you're shopping around, check these things before downloading:
- Read the in-app purchase list on the App Store page. If there are 5+ IAPs, the free tier is probably useless.
- Check the privacy label. If the app collects "Data Used to Track You," your baby's activity is being sold.
- Look for end-to-end encryption in the feature list. Without it, your baby's video goes through the developer's cloud.
- Check if it works over cellular. A WiFi-only app stops working the moment your router hiccups.
- Read the 1-star reviews. This is where you'll find out about hidden paywalls and connection problems.
Our recommendation
For most families, BabyMonitor Luna is the best truly-free option on iOS right now. It's the only app we tested that combines:
- Genuinely free core monitoring (no trial timer)
- Cellular support out of the box
- End-to-end encryption
- No ads, no data harvesting
- A 7-day free trial for HD video if you want to try it
Download it, test it for a few nights, and only pay if you decide HD video is worth it to you.
