Verdict: Good for local use, but the "free" tier is really a demo. You'll want to upgrade.

3. Annie Baby Monitor

Decent UI, but the free tier has a 3-day trial before locking down all features. After the trial, you can only use it for 30 minutes a day unless you subscribe. Not really "free."

The 7 apps we dropped from the list

The other seven apps we tested all fell into one of these categories:

• Fake free. Free to download, but every button opens a paywall.
• 24-hour trial then locked. Usable for one day, then nothing works.
• Ad-riddled. Full-screen ads every few minutes — catastrophically bad for an app you want running overnight.
